Geovane Martins

Engineer and lawyer, founder and Director of Hect. He has more than 30 years of experience in project environments, providing services to contractors and owners. He provides preventive consulting through the implementation of contract control and monitoring systems. He has extensive experience in claim negotiation and acts as an expert witness, arbitrator, mediator and dispute board member. He teaches postgraduate courses at Dom Helder, PUC Minas and FUMEC University, in addition to delivering in-company courses and writing articles on topics related to his areas of practice.
Geovane Martins began his technical career in 1987 as a Building Technician. At the time he was studying business administration, and later graduated in Civil Engineering and Law. In 1994 he joined Construtora Costa Martins as technical director. At the construction company he was responsible for contracts with several clients, including VALE, CSN (Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional) and UNIMED, in addition to carrying out a number of public contracts. He is currently a partner in the company, which focuses on building construction. In 2005, after a period devoted to project management consulting, including abroad, he founded Hect, a consulting firm. At Hect he has led multidisciplinary teams, where he performs and coordinates, among other activities, the following:
- Expert witness and technical advisory work in complex cases;
- Diagnosis of the causes of losses / deviations in engineering contracts;
- Schedule analysis to determine responsibility for delays;
- Productivity studies and the causes of productivity loss, as well as calculation of the resulting costs;
- Claim negotiation;
- Risk analysis of projects and contracts;
- Consulting on the development of engineering and project management solutions for environmental works for BHP BILLITON in Brazil.
- Preparation of Strategic Project Plans (PEP), including cost and schedule estimates;
- Project management consulting based on PMBOK and AACE guidelines;
- Consulting aimed at optimizing construction processes, shortening schedules and reducing costs;
- Evaluation of corporate recovery plans;
- International experience, having worked on projects in Argentina (Mining), Chile (Mining and Infrastructure), Panama (Panama Canal), Albania (Energy) and Ethiopia (sanitation).

Geovane Martins has worked on a wide range of projects; in the area of deviation analysis, damage calculation and disputes alone, he has analyzed more than 600 contracts. Projects he has taken part in include:
- Mining: expansion and improvement of the CERRO VANGUARDIA gold mine (Argentina); capacity expansion of a metallurgical plant in the state of Goiás; other copper, nickel and iron mining projects;
- Tailings dams: analysis of management and technical deviations in more than 10 dams in Brazil and Argentina. Two of the projects involved the failure of dam structures, with the central discussions revolving around (i) insurance payments and (ii) liability;
- Energy: contract analyses for (i) wind farms; (ii) thermal power plants; (iii) small hydropower plants; (iv) large hydroelectric plants; (v) KESH thermal power plant (Albania); (vi) transmission lines.
- Steel: blast furnaces and auxiliary structures;
- Infrastructure: ports; highways; airports; urban development; railways; sanitation.
- Panama Canal (supporting NAVIGANT);
- Buildings: (i) commercial buildings, hospitals, residential; (ii) renovations;
- Various projects at the PETROBRAS COMPERJ and RNEST complexes;
- Chemicals and pharmaceuticals: industrial plants for medicines and chemical products;
- Offshore platforms: P58 and P62 oil platforms; Cidade de Paraty – SBM; subsea maintenance of PETROBRAS oil platforms;
- Other industries: pulp, oil and gas, automotive.
